New England Rails and Sails, Fall Foliage and Ichabod Washburn History Tour

Admire New England’s autumn splendor, taking scenic motorcoach, train and boat tours with fellow Ichabods and friends.  The trip begins and ends in Boston; during the nine-day trip, visit Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Connecticut.  Among other places, visit the Freedom Trail, Kennebunkport, Casco Bay, Portland Head Light, White Mountains, Kancamagus Scenic Byway, Quechee Gorge, Plymouth Rock and whale watching at Cape Cod Bay.  A local historian in Worcester, home town of Washburn University’s namesake, Ichabod Washburn, will share information about the real “Mr. Ichabod.”

Itinerary **

Day 1  Arrive in Boston
Arrive in Boston, Massachusetts and transfer to hotel via private motorcoach.  Free time, then evening welcome dinner. Meal: D
Day 2  Boston & Kennebunkport, Maine
Breakfast at the hotel followed by sightseeing tour of historic Boston including the Freedom Trail and the Public Garden. Then, travel up the coast and stop at Kennebunkport, one of Maine’s coastal jewels and the summer home to many of America’s rich and famous, before continuing to the seaside town of Portland, Maine. Rich in history and culture, Portland boasts a vibrant waterfront with one-of-a-kind shops, galleries and restaurants. Check into the hotel for two-night stay.  Meal: B
Day 3  Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad & Casco Bay Cruise
Breakfast at the hotel then begin the day at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad, dedicated to Maine’s history with the two foot narrow gauge railroad system. Take the short 1.5 mile long ride along the Eastern Promenade of Casco Bay. Make a stop at the historic Portland Head Light. Later, Maine’s rocky shoreline and wooded islands come into view on a scenic cruise in Casco Bay. Sail past Victorian cottages dotted along Little and Great Diamond Islands. Group dinner later this evening.  Meals: B, D
Day 4  New Hampshire’s White Mountains & North Conway Scenic Railroad
Breakfast at the hotel, then leave the coast and travel west into New Hampshire’s White Mountains. In North Conway, board the North Conway Scenic Railroad. You will enjoy the Mt. Washington Valley countryside and relive part of railroad history when the first train traveled through this region over 135 years ago. Later, enjoy a group lunch and time for shopping at some of the many outlet stores or browse the local shops in North Conway.  Check into hotelMeals: B, L
Day 5  Kancamagus Scenic Byway & Quechee Gorge
Breakfast at the hotel, then begin the day by traveling the Kancamagus Scenic Byway as it follows a beautiful path through the White Mountains. It is one of the world’s most spectacular fall-foliage trips and meanders through vast forests, old logging roads and Indian hunting paths. Cross into Vermont and stop at Quechee Gorge to view the spectacular scenery of the area before arriving at your hotel.  Group dinner later this evening. Meals: B, D
Day 6  Worchester & Foxwoods Resort Casino
Breakfast at the hotel, then head to Worchester, home of Washburn's namesake, Ichabod Washburn.  Visit Washburn and Moen Wire Mill, Washburn House, Worchester Institute of Technology and the rural cemetery.  A group dinner will be held in Mechanics Hall.  After dinner, go to the Foxwoods Resort Casino, your home for the next two nights. Meal: B D
Day 7  The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Becky Thatcher
Breakfast at the resort.  The Valley Railroad Company operates the coal-fired locomotives of the Essex Steam Train. Be swept away by the hiss of the steam and the blast of the whistle as you pass through some of the most beautiful country in the state. See forests and streams, beautiful vistas and nostalgic towns. At Deep River Landing, board the Riverboat Becky Thatcher for a relaxing trip up the Connecticut River, before returning to Foxwoods. A group lunch is also included today. Meals: B, L
Day 8  Plymouth Rock & Whale Watching Cruise
Breakfast at the resort, then pass through the state of Rhode Island, famous for its maritime history. In Plymouth, Massachusetts climb aboard your sea going vessel for a whale watching excursion. This naturalist guide-led cruise sails out to Cape Cod Bay and Stellwagen Bank, a marine sanctuary and primary feeding ground for Humpback, Finback, Minke and the endangered Right Whales. Pay a visit to Plymouth Rock where our forefathers first settled on American soil. Check in to hotel.  Tonight, gather for a farewell dinner hosted by your Tour Manager. Meals: B, D
Day 9  Travel Home
Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer to Boston’s Logan Airport for flight home. Meal: B
