Swearing-in Ceremony

 

Join fellow Washburn University School of Law alumni, Dean Carla Pratt and others from the School of Law in this unique opportunity to become a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States in open court on Monday, May 16, 2022. 

Please make sure to read this information carefully - there are two main components:
1) Application to the Supreme Court (see instructions to the right); and
2) Registration for the overall event. 

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

Application materials to be considered for admission to the Supreme Court: Tuesday, March 15, 2022. 
Deadline to register with the Washburn University Law Alumni Association for the trip: Tuesday, March 15, 2022. 
Marriott Metro Center hotel reservation deadline: Monday, May 2, 2022

COST

Event Registration fee - $350 per person and includes all activities listed below including transportation to all events.
U.S. Supreme Court Admission fee - $200 per person (only pay for the individual being sworn into the Supreme Court).

ADMITTEES AND GUESTS

Washburn Law is limited to 25 alumni determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Each admittee may bring one guest into the courtroom to witness the ceremony. Additional guests may be allowed at the discretion of the Court but are not guaranteed. All guests are encouraged to participate in all other events for the day.

Evening: Washburn Alumni Reception

Tuesday, May 17, 2022
Morning: Bus Tour of Arlington Cemetery and Mount Vernon
(tour will finish in the early afternoon)

Open Court Admission

In this admission, the applicant is presented in court on Monday, May 16, 2022, during a special session.

Admittees must send the following to the Washburn Law Alumni Office by Tuesday, March 15, 2022:

  • Application for Admission to Practice (see also Instructions for Admission to the Bar)
  • Endorsements of two sponsors (included on your application) who are members of the Supreme Court Bar who know the applicant personally and are not related to the applicant by blood or marriage. (Washburn Law can assist you with this requirement. Please contact Anne McInerney at amcinerney@wualumni.org or 785.670.2752.)
  • Certificate of Good Standing from the presiding judge, clerk, or authorized official of the highest court of a State, Commonwealth, Territory or Possession, or of the District of Columbia evidencing the fact that the admittee has been a member of the Bar of such court for three years.

    IN KANSAS: To request a certificate of good standing, send your name, attorney registration number, and mailing address to registration@kscourts.org. Certificates are mailed within two business days. Electronic certificates are not available. There is no charge for the certificate. 
  • Send application for admission to practice and a certificate of good standing to Anne McInerney at 1729 SW MacVicar, Topeka, KS 6604. It must be post marked by Tuesday, March 15, 2022

Written Motion Admission

If you are unable to attend, you may be admitted by written motion. Graduates can file a completed application directly with the U.S. Supreme Court Clerk's Office. The certificate is mailed directly to the applicant. There is no limit on the number of graduates who can apply for admission by written motion.
