Legacy Scholarships

Scholarships can make the difference in students’ lives. They make college affordable. They allow students to focus more on their education and less on how they will pay for it. Established in 1944, Alumni Association legacy scholarships reward the children, spouses and other family members of alumni with beneficial scholarships. In 2021, 98 students received more than $43,000 in scholarships for the 2021-22 school year.

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship application period for students attending Washburn during the 2022-23 academic year opens on Monday, Nov. 1, 2021, and closes on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021. The application period for students attending Washburn during the 2023-24 academic year will open in fall 2022.

A complete scholarship application consists of 2 parts:

  • The online application
  • Finalized alumni association membership(s) for students and legacy family members
(All student applicants must be student members of the Alumni Association as of the 2022-23 application year.)

Student biographical statements and college/ high school transcripts are no longer requirements as of the 2022-23 application year.

All materials and memberships must be received by December 1, 2021, for consideration. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. See Instructions and Criteria link for further detail.

Applicants must be Washburn alumni or legacy students. Undergraduate students, graduate students, international students, part-time and full-time students and incoming first-year School of Law students who meet the criteria may apply. Scholarship awards are disbursed in two payments - one half in the fall and one half in the spring.

Note: Filing for assistance through Washburn’s Financial Aid Office or applying for general university academic scholarships does not constitute your application for an Alumni Association scholarship. You must file a separate online application through the Alumni Association.

Did You Know?

There are many ways to help fund legacy scholarships. A portion of Alumni Association membership dues, proceeds from the Washburn University license plate program and registration fees for Alumni Association events help fund the scholarships. You may also chose to make a gift directly to the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
