Legacy Scholarships

Scholarships can make the difference in students’ lives. They make college affordable. They allow students to focus more on their education and less on how they will pay for it. Established in 1944, Alumni Association legacy scholarships reward the children, spouses and other family members of alumni with beneficial scholarships. In 2018, 121 students received more than $49,000 in scholarships for the 2018-19 school year.

The Alumni Legacy Scholarship application period for students attending Washburn in 2021-22 opened on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, and closed on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2020. The application period for students attending Washburn in 2022-23 will open in fall 2021.

A complete scholarship application consists of 4 parts:

  • The online application
  • A biographical statement
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Finalized alumni association membership(s) (if applicable)

All materials and memberships must be received by December 1, 2020, for consideration. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. See Instructions and Criteria link for further detail.

Applicants must be Washburn alumni or legacy students. Undergraduate students, graduate students, international students, part-time and full-time students and incoming first-year School of Law students who meet the criteria may apply. Scholarship awards are disbursed in two payments - one in the fall and one in the spring.

Note: Filing for assistance through Washburn’s Financial Aid Office or applying for general university academic scholarships does not constitute your application for an Alumni Association scholarship. You must file a separate online application through the Alumni Association. A separate copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided to the Alumni Association, even if copies have already been provided to the university for the admissions process.

Did You Know?

There are many ways to help fund legacy scholarships. A portion of Alumni Association membership dues, proceeds from the Washburn University license plate program and registration fees for Alumni Association events help fund the scholarships. You may also chose to make a gift directly to the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
